Helpful Information

What is Yoga ?

Yoga is from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ and means union. It is a physical and spiritual practice originating from India designed to unite mind, body & soul. Many people think of it purely as a physical practice but it goes much deeper and yogic philosophy provides teachings and inspiration which can help you navigate challenges both on and off the mat. A Yoga practice includes asana - physical postures, Pranayama - breathing exercises, Meditation and Savasana - relaxation.

What are the benefits of Yoga ?

Yoga can help to build physical strength, improve flexibility and posture and keep your joints healthy.
It can help to improve internal functions of the body including digestion and circulation. It can also improve mental strength and determination, focus, concentration and balance. Yoga can help to alleviate stress and anxiety and control a busy mind. It also teaches us to be present, to let go and develop qualities of patience, acceptance, gratitude and positivity.

What style of yoga do you teach ?

I teach a blend of authentic hatha yoga and slow gentle flow incorporating both stillness and movement. My classes typically include asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), meditation, savasana (relaxation) and a sprinkling of yogic philosophy to support you both on and off the mat.

Go to the Teaching Style section of my website for more info.

Can I try a class first before purchasing a bundle ?

Yes of course! I always recommend trying first to check if the class is the best fit for you and your goals. As a new client, you can enjoy a free taster class providing you book and pay for a bundle within 7 days of attending. Otherwise, your first taster class will be charged at £10.

I am a complete beginner…Are your classes suitable for me ?

My classes are mixed ability and perfectly suited for beginners and improvers. I usually instruct and demo at the same time with students able to either watch first if unsure of a posture or work alongside me. Clear instructions encourage correct alignment and the benefits of a posture are frequently shared. Beginners are always encouraged to take breaks when needed and differing levels of challenge are offered allowing all students to work at their own level. You will be warmly welcomed into a friendly class and community which is neither competitive nor judgmental.

For absolute beginners I do offer one or more private beginner sessions, specifically aimed at those who have never tried yoga before and are feeling naturally nervous of joining a public class.

I am so inflexible and can’t touch my toes!
Can I come to your classes ?

Absolutely! Not being flexible is a really good reason to start coming to yoga.

Over time and with regular practice you will start to see an improvement. Plus....

‘Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down.' Jigar Gor.

Can I attend your classes if I am pregnant ?

It can be a wonderful time to practice yoga with many benefits for both you and the baby, but I recommend that you find a specialist pregnancy yoga class at this time, particularly if you have never done yoga before. As with any exercise during pregnancy, always make sure you seek the advice
and guidance of your healthcare professionals.

Can I attend your classes if I have an injury ?

If you have an injury or medical condition it is essential you speak to your GP or healthcare professional first to seek their advice and authorisation before attending a class. It is also essential that you make me aware of any injury or condition by including details on the Registration and Health Screening Form and discussing any particular restrictions which may affect your practice. I can usually offer alternatives or adapt a posture to your specific needs. You should always practice with care and caution and not attempt postures beyond your capability or that risk further injury.

What do I need to do before my first class ?

Please request and complete an electronic

Registration and Health Screening Form and return to me at least 48 hours before your first class.

This will require you to read and agree to my Privacy Notice and Terms and Conditions.

Advance payment for the class is required to secure your spot.

Can I eat before class ?

Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach.
Depending on the time of the class, it is advisable to allow at least 3 hours after a big meal
or only eat a light snack about an hour and a half before the class starts.

What should I wear and bring to class ?

Wear comfortable loose clothes or a sports top and leggings and a warm layer for relaxation. Yoga is practiced with bare feet but you may wish to wear socks during meditation & relaxation. Some students choose to wear ‘sticky’ socks but this is not something I recommend.

Please bring a yoga mat and water.

What time should I arrive to a class ?

Please arrive 10 minutes before a class is due to start. You can use this time to settle on your mat in meditation or relaxation or to start warming up. If you do arrive late for unavoidable reasons, please come in quietly ensuring not to disturb anyone and ensure you warm up first.

What if I buy a bundle and miss a class ?

It is possible to miss one or two classes, as bundles of 5 classes are valid for 7 weeks and bundles of 10 classes valid for 13 weeks. If you are unable to attend your usual class, you can also swap to an alternative class (if available) within the same 7 or 13 week period. This must be requested in advance and is subject to availability and may incur an additional cost.

How do I log in and set up for an online class ?

You can find all the info you need in my Online Yoga Class Guidance.
